Katy Perry: Part of Me Review

Just in time for everyone to shoot off their fireworks this week, Katy Perry: Part Of Me will arrive in theaters on July 5, Thursday in all its 3D glory.
Katy Perry: Part Of Me is a behind-the-scenes documentary that traces her ascent from gospel singer Katy Hudson to the present day with countless awards cluttering up the mantelpiece.

The film captures the impact of divorce on an exhausted Katy Perry as she takes her California Dreams tour around the world, intercut with energetic concert footage recorded at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Part of Me is a psychedelically hued, raucous affair which captures the excitement, exhaustion and even heartbreak of a tumultuous year in the star’s life. This viewer, who in the past frankly found a lot of her music (especially “California Gurls”) tritely commercial, came away from it with a newfound admiration and respect for this fiercely determined, highly individual, smart and funny young woman.
